We passed by this fascinating spot while on our way to Shirahama. Hashikuiiwa is located at the easternmost point in Kushimoto, Wakayama. Literally, ‘Hashi’ means Bridge, whereas ‘Kui’ means Pillar. These rocks come in various sizes and shapes, due to the long-term exposure to the winds & waves. They line up as a bridge towards Oshima Island for about 850m. Its most amazing sight is during sunrise, when the sun shines through the rocks at different angles. Unfortunately, we were unable to capture that moment, but this ‘noon-hour’ snapshots still worth a glimpse.
Its Legend:
Long time ago, people from Kushimoto and Oshima Island had tried to build a bridge between the 2 places. Unfortunately, each attempt failed as Amanojaku Monster would appear and destroy their effort. Then one day, a monk with great holy power named Kobo Daishi passed by Kushimoto, and been persuaded to help the people. He confronted the monster, and the monster told him to build the bridge alone in 1 day, by giving him strength of 100 horses, with the condition he had to stop whatever he’s doing by the time the early rooster cried. And so the next day, Kobo Daishi started his work, by collecting the big rocks around and threw them in the sea as pillars one after another. Until night time, Amanojaku Monster was amazed and worried for Kobo might finish the work in time, so he faked a rooster cry and stopped him. That’s why the Hashikui Rocks were only half way through and did not reach the end.
