Time for the 80′s again. I can’t help it, I listen to the 80′s songs a.k.a my kid songs, ask my older bro & sis. Shameful to say, this is the first time I heard this version. AND, the fun part is : I think I know 80% of the singers/bands in it!! My, don’t they look good (young) back then!! Can you name all of them?? Try it first before you decide to cheat later. =) Let’s see how good you are!

Do They Know It’s Christmas?” was release by Band Aid, a group that consisting of Irish & British musicians who were well known (of course, some even now) back in the 80′s. It is for charity purposes, to instill awareness to the public and raise funds to relieve 1984-1985 famine in Ethiopia. (source from Wikipedia)

I always find the artists/public figures play a huge role, and undeniably one of the best instruments to create awareness among the public, as the media are just right behind their back, preparing to get the latest scoop about them, although they hope for the dirty stuffs, mostly. Truth is, that is not going to help much in our society, by giving the youngsters their bad examples/behaviours that lead them astray. Pop Idols are humans too, they have weaknesses and problems just like we do. It’s their special talents that we appreciate, why not use it for the good cause, society and mankind? Yet again, we just like to put our nose into their personal matters, otherwise People/Entertainment Biz won’t be earning big bucks right as we speak.

Anyway, it’s a good effort, like the song “We Are The World” is another classic. And while listening “Do They Know It’s Christmas” and eyeing our favourite artists, why not take a look too at the lyrics and think about the unfortunates for a change, aren’t we the lucky ones?

It’s Christmas time

There’s no need to be afraid

At Christmas time

We let in light and we banish shade

And in our world of plenty

We can spread a smile of joy

Throw your arms around the world

At Christmas time

But say a prayer

Pray for the other ones

At Christmas time it’s hard

But when you’re having fun

There’s a world outside your window

And it’s a world of dread and fear

Where the only water flowing

Is the bitter sting of tears

And the Christmas bells that ring

There are the clanging chimes of doom

Well tonight thank God it’s them instead of you

And there won’t be snow in Africa

This Christmas time

The greatest gift they’ll get this year is life

Where nothing ever grows

No rain nor rivers flow

Do they know it’s Christmas time at all?

Feed the world

Let them know it’s Christmas time

Feed the world

Let them know it’s Christmas time again

BRIDGE:

(Here’s to you) raise a glass for everyone

(Here’s to them) underneath that burning sun

Do they know it’s Christmas time at all?

Feed the world

Let them know it’s Christmas time

What do you guys think about this version, by Band Aid 20? A whole different rendition. Which version you preferred? =P
