How would you like your blog posts to go viral?

Ask any blogger, he/she will tell you: Submit your posts to social bookmarking sites; promote them on social networks.  Sure, but have we optimized our blogs for that challenge yet? Do your readers ever bother to use those lovely social bookmarking plugins beneath your post?

Educate Readers To Utilize Social Bookmarking Plugins.. HOW?

Since self-submissions are prohibited, it lies in the hands of our readers. They may like your post so much but no idea how to share it. What you can do is :

1. Increase visibility of your social bookmarking plugins. Make a post to showcase the tool if you have to.

2. Announce your newly adapted plugin or a social network you just joined; encourage readers to try/join as well.

3. Make a summon at the end of each post to whether ‘stumble/tweet’ the post if they like it. Needless to sound pitiful or demanding, just a friendly reminder that makes them realize  ‘Ohhh.. I can do that! ‘

4. Create a poll. Ask your readers what are their likes/dislikes in post-sharing.

I enjoyed Darren’s latest post about The Myth of ‘Great Content’ Marketing Itself. Post-promoting is a part of content-seeding. If you don’t care about that little post-sharing plugin, your readers won’t either. Remember,

“A Quality Content is Nothing Without Audiences!”

16 Social Bookmarking Plugins To Promote Your Posts

Before that, let me share with you a plugin-check I had on blogs I subscribed (nearly 60% of them are the frequent visitors of my blog). Although the figures do not represent the majority but at least they show the behavior of those who I am networking with for the time being.

social-bookmarking-plugins

Good to know that most of them are using social bookmarking tools, but how about 25% who aren’t? Do they aware of the plugins or simply not planning to include one? Thanks to Christie and the discussion we had in one of her posts’ comment, I decided to test the WordPress plugins myself. Instead of going into lengthy reviews, I decided to share them visually instead — the images can speak well for themselves.

Expandable Plugins vs. Displayed Social Bookmarking Icons

Expandable plugins required mouse-over or a mouse-click to expand the bookmarking list, usually supporting up to 50 to 100+ bookmarking sites; while displayed social bookmarking icons are more focus and visible, but limited choices. If you’re a visual type of visitor like I am, probably you are more into the latter. There’s no exact right or wrong pick, simply self-preferences. If you don’t own any just yet, now it’s a good time to grab one!

Expandable Plugins — A Click/Hover to Expand

1. Share This

2. AddThis

3. Socialmarker

4. Sexy Expand Bookmarking

5. Add To Any

6. ibegin share

7. Social Bookmarks

- The setting is ‘hide’ in default, meaning you need to click to expand the social bookmarking icons. You can preset the preferred icons to be shown:

social-bookmarks

social-bookmarks-expand

Or you can have the icons displayed without hiding (arranging from 1 to 5 lines) :

Displayed Social Bookmarking Icons — One Clear View

8. Tweet This

- Plenty of social bookmarking sites to choose from, come in various styles, colors and sizes. Settings available to tweet your latest post.

9. AddToThis

- Simple is better. 5 nice-looking icons as shown below:

addtothis

10. Bookmarkify

- Can reposition the plugin on top or bottom of the post. The ability to display all the icons chosen (multiple sites to choose from):

bookmarkify-display

Or prevent them from crowding the area by adding a ‘More’ option for expansion.

bookmarkify-more

11. diggZ-Et

- The familiar, good-old Digg button on top of your post.

diggz-et

12. Social Bookmarking RELOADED

- Exactly how they will show up underneath your post:

social-bookmarking-reloaded

13. Social Dropdow

- Preset your favored social bookmarking/media sites and have them appear in each post. Adjust the drop down width according to your likings. Do aware while activating this plugin, you may need to embed a code as instructed in ‘other information’ to have them displayed properly:

socialdropdown-display-no-expand

Too many of them? Configure it for 1-click expansion instead, or ‘more’:

socialdropdown-aft-embed

14. SocioFluid

- Absolutely one of my favorites for fun visual effects. Not only it has plenty of social bookmarking options, but including the flexibility to resize the icons (16, 24, 32, 48) and adjust placements (top/bottom). Below are the examples of 16px and 48px respectively:

sociofluid-16-x-16sociofluid-48-x-48

Or better! Have it configured as when hovering you get to see the fluid-movements from small to enlarged. Pretty neat huh?

15. Top Social Bookmarking Buttons

- Yes, only 7 sites provided. If that’s all you need, why not?

16. Tweetmeme

- Not only it comes with analytics, but visible and easy tweeting with just one click. If you’re a Twitter fanatic, you’ll agree this is a must-have.

Hi Barbara,

I’m glad the info helps. I’ll be off to check out the bookmarking icons on your site in just a while. Maybe I get to use it too! ^^ Great seeing you here again, take care!

Thanks so much for this post! I have wondered what some of these are when I see them on blogs but had no idea what to look for in Google. :) These pictures and explanations should get us pointed to some things we can use to get more Tweets/Stumbles/etc.!

Christie,

Thank you so much for inspiring this post idea. I had great fun doing it. I’m also wondering how we can make full use of our blog spaces. Will change to a new social bookmarking plugin myself soon after replying the comments.

Actually this is just the pt.1, I may do another soon as to prepare the readers to help promote the posts they like, even without the bookmarking plugins. Stay tune!

Nice Post!
For a while I used “Share This” over at my site but, didn’t like the hover out menu…

I’ve since started using the “Sociable” plugin… It works really well and is VERY customizable as for the sites you want it to display.

Robert,

Oh yes! You just remind me of missing out Sociable within the plugins. ha.. actually it’s interesting to find that most of the blogs I subscribed to are sociable users. I’ve checked out the link and yoast page indeed make a clear instructions on the how-to’s. Thanks for providing the tips.

Well, so far I have only a Stumble button but I like the number 8 with the actual words, not just the icons.

Okay — gonna post this and then off to vote for you, you Famous Blogger, you!

xo

Jannie,

I think the Tweet This button will look great on your site! You have some really lovely posts going on and I’ll be glad to see more people promoting them for you.

ha.. I’m no famous blogger, just a lucky one who got blessed by some really nice people. No matter what the outcome is, I’ll be enjoying the process and all of you guys’ support.

Thank you so much, Jannie. *hugs*

Thanks Ching Ya ! ;)
.-= S.Pradeep Kumar´s last blog ..Three Ways To Hide Your Affiliate Links For Better Sales =-.

Hi Ching Ya,

I could have used this a few weeks ago when I re-did mine. I tried several different versions here – some did not work on my blog, some just did not get any results.

I did not realize before how fussy I am with these little things!

As a user, although many of these look wonderful, I would never click them myself – they are now just part of the scenery. Yes, I know, it’s horrible the life of a scanner :)

So I’m trying out some big buttons for the moment. I’m hoping that if there is less choice, there may be more click throughs. Plus I believe all of these plugins do not include the bizSugar button, which I like.

But I’m sure I’ll want to experiment with something else later on :)

Thanks for a great article as usual!
.-= Cindy King´s last blog ..Cross-Cultural Twitter Interview With Deborah Swallow =-.

Cindy,

Honor to have you here. ^^

Yes, correct. Some are so incredibly complete — over a hundred social sites provided, yet even myself wouldn’t go through them. I find bigger or less icons are much easier to attract. I’m experimenting them myself with types & repositioning; hopefully can get the best out of some.

I love BizSugar! Although my site is non-business related but hopefully some social media posts can make it up the chart one day, anything that benefits the business-makers. ^^

Appreciate your input, Cindy! Always glad to have you.

I really like the social marker plugin. I found it quite useful and easy to use. It saves me a lot of time when I promote my blog posts on social media networks!
.-= Benjamin Cip´s last blog ..How To Increase Your Blog Traffic =-.

Hi Benjamin,

Nice of you to drop by! ^^

I just came back from your site and noticed you’ve changed to sociable, is it? Great! Now you can compare the two and let me know which works better for you. I think sociable is a nice choice since it’s fully displayed. :-) I’ve changed to SocioFluid from Add to Any too.

Best wishes!

I think that socialmaker plugin was great because in only one click you could be linked with about 40 social media, without rewrite and addind the posts link everytime. I just changed the bookmark button with the one of the new ultimate blogging theme upgrade. It looks nice.
.-= Benjamin Cip´s last blog ..Gr8ecom Webhosting Review =-.

Certainly is. ^^ Really look good on your site there. Hope it’ll increase the sharing chances for your informative posts.

I had the Sexy Bookmarks plugin, and one day I woke up to find that something had went wrong with it and it had put all of this gibberish code on my posts. After that, I just directly embedded some icons and code that I found into my template, instead of using a plugin. Sociable was the one I used for the longest time before that, and it was pretty good.

Kristi,

So nice to see you here! ^^

The first time I ever noticed sexy bookmarks was on your page, I can remember that vividly. :-) Just didn’t know its name until recently. I like your present bookmarks too, very catchy and hard to miss. I always prefer bigger size icons. Perhaps one day I’ll try self-configured style as well. We’ll see.

Hope to see you again soon!

It’s great to see these all in one place. It would have been nice to have the article a while ago, when I was trying to figure out what to use :)

I went with a combination of Tweet This and Sexy. I would have preferred to just use Tweet This, but the buttons weren’t lining up properly, so I went with the hybrid option.

This might be the first time I’ve seen someone use GraphJam for something serious :) I enjoy browsing the humorous submissions.
.-= Kosmo @ The Casual Observer´s last blog ..Kiosk Warfare =-.

Welcome Kosmo,

Pleasure to meet you! I really enjoy your message, here’s why:

- you caught my attention instantly with that ‘hybrid’ term! Very nice incorporation indeed. I would’ve picked ‘Tweet This’ to be visible as well; I like Sexy bookmarks too but personally I find them less effective if >1 row so I like how you arrange to have only 4 icons displayed. Less distracting! :-)

- LOL!! I’m so glad somebody noticed GraphJam. Frankly I’ve fallen in love with that web application ever since I lay my eyes on it! Although I was between ‘Shall I Use It?’ ‘Not use it?’, then I just got attracted to its beautiful pie chart, can’t help it! Guilty as charged. haha..

You’re one heck of a observer indeed! I’m impressed. Do drop by more often! ^^

Thanks Ching Ya – so much great information to digest as usual. Every time I read one of your fab posts I am reminded about how much I have to learn about blogging and promoting my blog.
You are great. :-)
PS I LOVE the top image you have created with all the networking sites flying out of the screen. It looks brilliant!

Thank you so much Michelle,

You’ve been supportive since my earlier days of blogging and I really thankful for that! Nothing’s more fulfilling to hear someone benefited from the post, it means so much!

You have great writing skills and I’m sure your readers are dying to share them for you! Try it and see how it helps.

Truly glad you like the image! :-) I was trying on some effects, although it’s not perfect but close to what I hoped for.

Finally a post that displays many of the “social plugins” out there :)

I’m just using Sociable, I think it’s called, because I had it recommended when I started. But it’s very much in the background and doesn’t stand out much, so I doubt if people actually see it – or use it.

Maybe I should give SocioFluid or similar, a try.

You don’t know how long I have been looking for a collection of social bookmarking plugins like this. Thank you so much. Very nicely done.

I too, was in search for a more visible plugins myself. Currently replacing Add To Any with Sociofluid. I prefer myself some Displayed Plugins, sometimes less is more. We’ll see how it’ll turn out. :-)

Do visit again sometimes.

Man, some of those were just plain ugly and I would rather shoot myself than display them on my blog :D

I use the Twittley button and am now displaying it at the end of the post because I reckon it makes it easier for the user to click it rather than having to scroll to the top of the post. I also have hard coded several popular social sites so they appear at the end of the post. Now it’s all up to the reader ;)

Excellent collection of social plugins. Great to see these all in one place. I have tried a few of these and am currently using Yoast’s Sociable plugin along with Tweetmeme. Sociable has worked well and I’ve also tweaked it a bit to use larger icons. Tweetmeme has also worked well. Both seem to receive ongoing enhancements which is great.

It is, both sociable and tweetmeme are among the favorites. I’ve visited Yoast site and impressed by his effort to improve the Sociable plugin. Some plugins really deserve a little tweak to become better, if only I know how. ^^

Hope you enjoy your stay! See you soon.

.-= ZXT´s last blog ..8 Ways to Improve your Alexa Ranking =-.

Hey I was able to make it show up (thanks for pointing me the settings) but it doesn’t do anything and its not clickable. I’m using WP 2.8.4…do you think its not compatible yet?
.-= ZXT´s last blog ..8 Ways to Improve your Alexa Ranking =-.

Zee,

I’m using the latest version of WP so I’m quite sure that’s not the problem. ^^

I just been to your site, seems to me all your icons are 16px in sizes. If you wish to make it ‘fluid’ as mine, you need to tweak the settings:

- set the ‘large’ icons to 32px or above while small remained as 16px. And set how the items should grow when the mouse is hover — this is just right underneath the size options mentioned.

You can find the above configuration after click through: Settings>Sociofluid .

Hope you can successfully adjust the settings. Otherwise it may be due to incompatibility with WP theme instead? I had several other plugins that failed to work with mine earlier but work well on other templates.

Thanks its working now. BTW, check my first award, you are included there.

Hi Sunil,

Thanks so much for the tip. Will be checking the application out, although I don’t normally go for mass-submissions. ^^ I once heard someone mentioned about the risk of been flagged as spammers by the bookmarking sites. I wonder if anyone has the similar experience ?

Great info! But I will say, I keep my bookmarking links to a minimum at the end of my posts. Many of my clients are not very familiar with social bookmarking so if i were to cluster so many at the end of my posts, I think they might be overwhelmed. But the basics such as Facebook, Twitter, maybe Digg are definitely a good idea.

Ching Ya
I’m guilty of forgetting to ask people if they like an article to feel free to stumble/tweet/etc. it at the end of my posts.

I think unless you’re really involved in social media, many people will skip right over many of those buttons, that’s why it’s good to mention it.

Ali,

Well, unless the bookmarking tools are not duplicated I think it’s ok. What I meant is: Tweetmeme and AddThis is very different, so no problem to have both on the site.

I won’t suggest to have similar ones say Add To Any and Sexy Bookmarks to be included together as it’s distracting and clutter up the site.
