6 Twitter Lists Applications to Expand Your Network

To overlook Twitter Lists is not possible right now. I tend to focus on Google Wave this week but obviously the immunity didn’t work. I have more expectations on Twitter Lists especially after the Seesmic Desktop integration.
Considering how Twitter has evolved, it won’t be long for web developers to come up with numerous applications for Twitter Lists. I can’t help but snoop around and got hold of these 6 Twitter Lists applications to expand your network.
For Network Expansion:
Twitter Lists Search Engines
Ever since Killer Search Apps for a successful Twitter Network, I haven’t been this hyped up about any Twitter-related search tools. I know, a little early for that but fact is, some are just right at our fingertips. You just need to know where to look and how to use it.
A. Listorious

It’s a directory of Twitter Lists where you can search for desired lists based on:
- Most Popular Lists
- A-List or trustworthy lists
- Newest lists
- Top Tags
Use the search box and type the possible list, person or tag. The results displayed are limiting to those who added their list to Listorious. So in order to have the best results, Listorious is encouraging everyone to submit their lists. Just how are we able to do that?

How to Add Your Twitter Lists to Listorious?
1. Go to Add List and grant access to Listorious by signing in to your Twitter account.

2. Enter the URL of your selected list, add descriptions and tags for the accuracy of search results.

3. You will be prompt to publicize your list to your Twitter network upon complete, or not.

4. You’re done! Check your Listorious account and be wowed with the neat Twitter profile, lists curated and lists you’re on.

B. Google Search
Ok, this isn’t actually an ‘exclusive’ Twitter Lists search tool but with a minor tweaking, Google Search can work like a charm ! The idea is to narrow down the search to twitter.com with keywords contained in Twitter Lists. Here’s how:
a. site:twitter.com/*/your keyword
For example, if I’m searching for lists containing the name ‘social media’ in twitter.com, I should type ‘site:twitter.com/*/social media‘ in the search box. The results will show as below:

Too complicated ? Here’s an easier solution:
C. Google Custom Search
Google Custom Search allows you to have the control over how and what to search for — it narrows down your search to limited websites predetermined during the customization. Of course, you need to endure some configuring steps but no pain no gain, right? In this case, I customized a search engine to narrow down my search to Twitter Lists in twitter.com. Instead of the lengthy search terms, now you can type in the keywords straight and get the desired results. Try the Twitter Lists Search Engine below and compare the results with Google Search, are they identical?
For Publicity: Twitter Lists Widget
Allowing you to display selected Twitter Lists with real time streaming. It’s a perfect widget for company to show off their staffs and encourage visitors to follow them on Twitter for updates. This can be a really cool widget if you have a collaborative team on a project – it makes the follow up easier and almost instant. (another alternative is using Tweetgrid with similar effects):

For Alerts: Listiti
[Updated 31/01/2012] No Longer Available
When Google Alerts meets Twitter Lists — it’s all about being ahead of the game. Set up or follow the list curated for authority figures in your niche; or even your blogger buddies. Prepare to receive email notification whenever a tweet from chosen list matches your prefixed keywords. Since this service is new, the alert can only be sent hourly.

For Those Lazy for Lists-Making: Conversationlist
–[Updated 15/01/2012] Service is Shutting Down
Easily put, Conversationlist is a list consisting of all the people you talked to or mentioned on Twitter. The list is building by itself, daily. Once you stop connecting with someone, he/she will be dropped off the list. If I were you, I’ll start compiling them in own lists as Conversationlist does make the process easier — start with someone you frequently talk to. Here’s 9 Reasons Why You Should Be In Love with Twitter Lists , try to make use of the lists accordingly.
** Updated**
Share Groups of Twitter Users: TweepML
[Updated 31/01/2012] No Longer Available
Similar to Listorious, TweepML allows you to create and find lists of users to follow on site. However, there is an extra feature: TweepML provides HTML embedding options for buttons, links and icons. Showcasing your choice of Twitter lists has never been easier! (thanks to Growmap for introducing this app)
To get the list ready simple Register & Create List; then you’ll need to fill up the details as followed, hit ‘Generate TweepML’ and voila!
It’s Up To You Now…
What are your expectations in Twitter Lists and the third party applications that are bound to spring up like mushrooms?
Don’t forget to spread a little love by sharing:

Your posts always amaze me! Great findings. Now it is so much easier to search and find specific “keywords” lists from people at Twitter!

Michael,
Thank you so much for dropping by. I’m just glad we have more solutions than we thought! Great satisfaction in finding the answers, always a pleasure.
Thanks for sharing! It’s a very good article. By the way, I’m a newbie blogger. I only started my latest blog last Nov 12. These kind of information are what I need.
.-= Renz´s last blog ..Photos Taken during Laguna-Bohol Ride =-.
The list management tool I most wish existed is one that would show me all the people I’m directly following PLUS all the people on any lists I’m following and have checkboxes to show me which lists they are or aren’t on.
At the moment it’s too easy to miss adding somebody to a list and then if I use the lists as to divide up my for twitter reading I’ll never see them. For example I could have a personal-high-priority list, a personal-low-priority list, a work-high-priority and work-low-priority (I’m make these as private lists) and each person should be on at least one of them – some people might be both personal friends and work contacts and might be on more than one. But it would be way too easy to miss somebody and at the moment it’s not easy to notice this has been done…
r
Ricky,
Bull’s-eye! I’m so glad you brought this up. As much as I love Twitter Lists, I’m sure checkboxes and a clear listing will make everything a lot easier. Due to the same reason, I can’t never feel I’ve done enough with the lists, so much for my 1k+following. Can’t imagine what will it be like for those who are over 5k++.
I sure hope a new desktop or web client can work out a solution for us. I don’t really mind to have a specified client just for listing as long it’s effective to keep track. Should I write to Tweetdeck or Seesmic for this?
Appreciate you sharing this. Great to see you, as always.
i amaze more on how fast people try to intergrated everything with twitter rather than twitter it self. totally great post, and finding.
Izzat,
Ha.. well, that’s what web/software developers are good at. Applaud their efforts and eagerness to break through the shell. I’ll say keep’em coming!
Yet another great list of applications that will make my never ending “try it” later” folder. Although this time I might just try listiti and the widget right away and see how it works. Thanks Ching as usual for these wonderful finds
.-= DiTesco´s last blog ..Forget Making Money Online – It Sucks #1 =-.
DiTesco,
Glad both of them made it to your front seat!
I know the feeling. It’s difficult to keep track all the updates. It’s intimidating sometimes to see those tools piled up in my folder. lol.. but maybe that’s the good side of it — potentials. Thank goodness I still remember the apps-comparison I promised. ha..
Thanks so much for visiting!
Wow, Ching Ya, I had no idea there were already apps for these lists! That widget looks very interesting to me, like you said, would be great to display the tweets of a collaboration group. Our tweets are getting more and more “findable” despite the raging river Twitter!
.-= Christie´s last blog ..Introvert Extrovert: Reaching out across the abyss =-.
Christie,
Absolutely! I think what we need now is more effective ‘organizers’ to deal with both tweets and lists. I have so many requests in my head or maybe I should approach a developer and throw them all on him/her. lol..
Great tip on how to use Google to find Twitter lists – never thought of doing that.
There’s just one thing I’m still a bit in doubt about: When subscribing to a list, do you then auto-follow all the members of that list? Or do you only get to see all the tweets from members on that list (without actually following them)?
.-= Klaus @ TechPatio´s last blog ..Twittley – A Digg-Like Twitter Community (Button Shuffle Colors) =-.
Hi Klaus,
Thanks for acknowledging the Google tip. It’s one of those light bulb moments. lol..
Following a list does not mean you’re following the people in it. In fact, Twitter Lists is said to be a solution for those who are approaching their follow limit to 2K. No harm done to your account at all.
This is a fabulous and helpful article, Ching Ya. Certainly worthy of a stumble. Everyone who tweets should read this.

Thank you so much, you’ve always been supportive. I appreciate that.
Interesting how people are quick to make tools that use Twitter. I sure hope the folks at Twitter have found a way to make money, otherwise all these tools will suddenly serve no purpose.
What would you do if Twitter went away for a week?
.-= McLaughlin´s last blog ..We Build Your Blog Contest =-.
McLaughlin,
I’m sure they have plans for that, behind closed doors. *evil grin*
For a week? I’ll blog about it — ‘The Week Twitter Left Me’– LOL!
Seriously, your question has reminded me to make sure I have more than one social network platform
for those I’m frequently connected. ^^ Think I’m going to miss tweeting for awhile, but I’ll probably invest my supposed ‘tweeting’ time on other platforms instead, and extra 5 minutes on cappuccino.
I will survive, I think.
This is a detailed and very significant post. I didn’t know there are many applications for twitter. What about tweetdeck, and hootsuite? which one is better? Thanks.
.-= Jena Isle´s last blog ..WOOF Contest – Top Picks for November 6, 2009 =-.
Jena,
There are Too Many of them, in fact. Can’t say which is better for they meet different users’ requirements.
Hootsuite is a web client while Tweetdeck, a desktop client. Both have their specialties. Since I promised DiTesco for a comparison post, perhaps I need to dig a lot more into them for a clearer review.
May I know which application you’re using currently? Perhaps I can answer this question better by analyzing your tweeting habit & goal first. Are you a heavy tweeter or not so much?
Hello Ching, there are days that I tweet a lot, there are ones in which I don’t tweet at all. You can call me a moderate tweeter. I log in to tweeter itself and i don’t use any secondary app. I don’t follow more tweeters because I don’t think I can manage the so many tweets. Thanks.
Jena,
For advanced users, they will look for multitasking twitter clients for multiple accounts management, intensive monitoring with grouping feature, multimedia sharing etc. Desktop clients made it easy for auto-log-on once OS is running.
If you’re not in that group, then rest assured that most of the clients can work well for you. Basic features all included for normal tweeting & easy RT/DM.
If your system is slow, advisable to go for web clients – less memory-consuming and no installation required.
If you’re into lists monitoring using web app, either Seesmic Web or Brizzly will do for now. As for Hootsuite, it consists of tweet scheduling and analytics, therefore quite an impressive tool either.
This is just the rough ideas. I’ll try to prepare a post about the comparisons soon. Until then, feel free to message me anytime for enquiries. I’ll be happy to help out if I can.
Ching Ya, you rock! I had all sorts of plans and must-do’s this morning, but I ended up spending the last hour playing with all your suggestions here. Tweeted this post. Excellent, thanks!

Hicham,
That’s for sure. Every improvement made on those applications is helping both the users and mostly, Twitter. Not to mention bloggers like me who are willing to give Twitter the free publicity due to the updates. Lucky little blue bird!
Is it more or is Twitter becoming a full time job in and of itself.
Thank you for providing this great list as it will help me get my work that needs to be done on my Twitter account done faster.
Ms.Freeman,
I’ll say Twitter has some plans of its own. While people are saying it’s not making any profits but this invention has caused so much attention. People are starting to notice tweets-sponsoring. There’s a lot we’re bound to witness.
You’re most welcome. Hopefully these tips can be of some use for you to locate potential customers/followers for your work and services. Thanks so much for visiting.
Amazing Round up Ching!
I saw listorous, but the google search hack is simply awesome, worth reading by my followers.

Again another brilliant article Ching Ya.
Agree some great findings here.
Twitter Lists is for sure bringing Twitter to the next level. Still some additions that need to be done. But it is getting there.
Now it is all about how we can fine tune our lists, and start bring our blogs up the next level.
Keep up writing great articles like this.

A lot of new improvements and services that come right after that – it’s getting more prevalent and you’re right, now it’s all coming down to strategize and optimizing what we have. That’s the most challenging part of all.
I haven’t even had the time to play with lists yet Ching Ya, but I do know that this post will make it a whole lot easier to deal with. I’ve also tweeted this post.

I don’t think I’m ever going to use any of these apps just to be honest. I maybe hostile with the Twitterlist idea because I really don’t find any beneficial returns out of it instead of congestion. Twitter could have done something else other than making some of its members feel like being left out as described by Chris Brogan which I completely agree.
.-= Mathdelane´s last blog ..Ten Commandments of Human Relations (Blogger Edition) =-.
Mathdelane,
Good to see you here again. ^^
I appreciate you voicing out your concern about Twitter Lists and it makes me realize there’s always two sides for one story.:-) It is originally a grouping feature similar to the one we have on Tweetdeck, except Twitter has made it public by default that caused the controversy in some extent. Perhaps Twitter should have came up with a better idea? Or we should just keep some of our lists private if uncomfortable? (I do of course, have some private lists and although they’re not in public, doesn’t mean they’re not important to me though) Obviously there’s always room for improvement. In Chris Brogan’s case, I actually agree with him for keeping his lists private since he is a popular figure with high amounts of connections.
Twitter Lists has helped me to gain back old connections therefore I chose not to emphasize on why I’m not on my friends’ lists for now.
I can’t guarantee whether I’ll always feel the same way but at least to me, now, it is an organizer.
Thank you for a thought provoking comment.
I’m not really an anti-Twitter because I love using it but the fact that it was becoming more congested other than the Twitterlist addition is the new RT functionality on the website which you can’t even edit to your liking is inviting a lot of spam and a waste of resources.
They should have focused more on securing their site as well as their members’ accounts instead of adding some blatantly useless interface. A sleeker and cleaner look similar to Meme could have been favorable but like what you’ve said, there’s always room for improvement and I hope they would realize that.

On the contrary, the idea for me to expand my network is via following others instead of counting the followers
Sorry if this sounds cliche but, for me, I prefer to focus on quality and continuously engaging network rather than keeping track on the numbers for now, it’s an experience learned. Of course, I still have much to do and I have yet satisfied, there are too many people to meet and so little time. I need to work a lot harder.
Yes, I indeed have FOLLOWED quite a number of new people due to the lists.
Excited to meet more!
I admire your efforts Ching! See you on the top.

what should be the URL of the twitter list in listorious? it always say “That doesn’t look like a valid list URL.”… or “That list doesn’t seem to exist on Twitter. Did you mistype it?” – what does these means…

Sorry for the delay. The URL of the Twitter Lists to be put in Listorious is something like this:
http://twitter.com/your username/list name
You can get the URL from the particular list you created in Twitter page.
