How Blog Review Can Help to Improve Blog Traffic

A lot of resolutions been talked about lately. How many of you have set up goals based on what you’ve learned in the past? Now I must admit, initially I have no intention to do a blog review based on performances in 2009. To dig up old archive seem troublesome and it’s much better to save effort for a much productive work, right? Wrong.
Measuring blog success isn’t just about bragging how good you are, but identify how much you could or should have done to improve blog traffic. Bottom line, if you are serious to increase blog traffic, a review is needed for:
- Periodic goal-settings
- Understanding own potentials and ability
- Measuring current blog status and progress
- Knowing parts to improve and avoiding repeated mistakes
- Following up on lost comments & connections
Based on these 6 ways to track blog success, I can have a general idea how my blog survived all the way from March, 2009 (1st post about social media). During the process, I immediately realized the first and utmost lesson is to involve Analytics and Feedburner more in my planning instead of just a casual check monthly.
Popularity and Blog Traffic Review
Results are ranging from 17th March, 2009 to 6th January 2010 (my 1st day of work in 2010):
What I love about tracking comments is to find out which post type attracts the most discussions; what matters to the readers when they visit and the content that stands out from the rest. Engagement is a big deal here therefore I’m blessed to have a group of loyal readers who are taking comments very seriously! May the spirit continues in 2010. Of course, in order to obtain more accurate results, social media strategies and time factor are to be taken into considerations as well.
Other criteria that helped in commenting: Do-Follow, CommentLuv (Reasons To Love), Blog Promoting via Social Media
Top 5 Famous Posts via Google Analytics:
13 Facebook Applications to Promote Your Blog
How To Pick Up From Your Blogging Downturns
How Seriously Do You Take Blog Comments?
16 Social Bookmarking Plugins to Promote Your Posts
16 Misconceptions About ‘Serious’ Blogging
The results are slightly different but undeniably, Facebook is a hot topic here. The post was only written in October, 2009 but it overtook other posts and came first in Analytics. Also, it made me realized which type of posts are search-worthy; which are favored in social bookmarking sites and so on.
My Top 5 Traffic Source in 2009

I’m only active in Stumbleupon after migrating to wordpress in July. SU brought me a lot of new visitors but its bounce rate was still among the highest comparing to other traffic source. In order to capture the right audience in StumbleUpon, do make sure the submitted post is tagged correctly. Here’s a great post of 5 Tactis to drive in traffic from StumbleUpon, old tricks but good tips. As for Google Search that improves to rank #3 out of no where, no doubt that WordPress plugins such as All In One SEO helped me a great deal.
I believe migrating to WordPress from Blogger is the smartest decision I made in 2009 to increase blog traffic.
Power of Twitter & StumbleUpon in Promoting Blog Posts
Even though I started to blog in August, 2008, I only switched to social media blogging in March, 2009. Between my first and last social media post in 2009, I found 2 spikes happened in May and September respectively. It was during the time when these 2 posts were published:
a) The Best of Twitter Desktop Clients – Secrets Revealed!
- (61% direct traffic while 21% Twitter.com)
I remembered clearly it was the magic of Twitter that drove in the traffic. Loic from Seesmic tweeted about this post and soon the tweet went viral! You may be surprised why Analytics showed most of the visits are from ‘direct traffic’ instead of Twitter.com, this is because some clicks from Twitter clients such as Tweetdeck, Twhirl etc will not be counted in Twitter.com but as ‘direct traffic’ to your blog.
b) How To Pick Up From Your Blogging Downturns – ( 85% stumbleupon)
I was very surprised with this result but I think part of the reasons is the kind support given by my blogger friends. Could it be due to the Su.pr evolution and easy-to-adapt toolbar for browsers which made stumbling quick and easy? I think so too since I’m also an active stumbler in the same way. Everyone can easily participate in more than one social media sites nowadays so it will definitely help if we manage to assist one another in post-promoting. That’s the beauty of integration and networking.
Now It’s Your Turn…

Wow!!! You are getting traffic from stumble upon and twitter as well. I hardly get any traffic from that. I am very inactive on stumble upon and other networks like digg.

Ricky,
I had the same fate with Digg too, or maybe I haven’t tried hard enough.
Think my luck with Blogengage is far better and I love the community that supports one another for quality content.
So what is your major traffic source?
No surprise there, Ricky. You receive what you give. If you’re inactively using StumbleUpon to promote other content, is it truly surprising few are stumbling your posts?
Hi Ching,
You’re very organized and methodical, no wonder you’re growing dynamically. Keep up the good work. For me, I blog as a hobby., but now I’m learning to earn from it as well…
All the best.

Hi Jena,
Pleasure to see you here!
Same here, I started this blog as a hobby too! If back in 2008 someone tells me that I could blog/write/doing freelance online for a living, I’ll never believe it. Isn’t it amazing how one thing leads to another, and then I get to meet all the wonderful people (including you) around the world and get inspired day after day.. I just couldn’t stop.
What’s your favorite post in your blog? Share the link so we could all jump over for a look.
I might have missed it you know.
Hello Ching,
That’s surprising to know. We are alike in so many ways. For now, this is my favorite post for our Power50 member . Thanks.

All the best.

Personal blogs are dying out as the result of Twitter and Facebook. For bloggers to grow we need to be a bit more professional and offer people value, not just sharing our personal life with our readers.
To analyze traffic is important to see where your traffic is coming from and perhaps market better in that area. However, I think looking at your analytics once a week is enough.
Cheers! ???
.-= Gordie – Lifestyle Design For You´s last blog ..Why Haven’t You Achieved Your Biggest Goal Yet? =-.
Gordie,
Thank you for the feedback. Always a pleasure to see you here. Nice homework you’ve given us earlier. ^^
I believe there is still room for personal blogs, although I must admit that FB & Twitter have indeed took some potential users away. Most of my real life friends are not blogging because they can share everything on Facebook nowadays. You know, they still wondering why am I doing with blogging? lol..
But good point there, even if we’re blogging about personal matters, it’s better to give people reasons to return.
Analytics-checking once a week is good as long as it fits in your blogging goal.
Thanks so much for visiting, see you again!
Heh, I look at my analytics once a month — if that. I don’t obsess over numbers, though.
Hi Ari,
Pleasure to meet you. Yes, that will be fine too as long it’s going according to your improvement/monitoring plan.
Thank you for visiting.
Ching Ya,
I’ve visited your blog before but (I think) this is the first time I’ve commented.
First let me say that I joined your FaceBook group, but at the time I didn’t realize that we needed to promote each other’s blogs. I will try my best to keep up, but if I find that I’m not doing well, I will switch you friending you instead.
I’m sure you will understand because of my heavy involvement with Blog Engage and now MMOSocialNetwork.
Now back to the topic here, I started off blogging just as a hobby too and just for fun really. I got sucked into being a true Twitter addict and became a social media blogger without even realizing it.
My traffic comes from Twitter, Blog Engage, Website Babble and some StumbleUpon.
I think it’s a fantastic idea to share your traffic sources the way you have done here.
I’m not sure if Gordie has some statistics that I’m not aware of, but I find it hard to believe that personal blogging is dying. WordPress.com, Blogger, Tumblr, Posterous and the other free services have made it so easy to start a blog that I think anyone that knows what a blog is has started one. I hope so anyway and I hope personal blogs never die. It’s the best way to get started and discover where your true passion lies.
Now that this comment is so long I hope it makes up for the others that I didn’t have a chance to leave.
Thanks for your support and it has been wonderful that Brian has helped us meet one another through Blog Engage.
Cheers!

It’s nice to meet you on FB and don’t worry, that’s fine with me too. It’s better to make sure we can make full use of our network sites rather than being hiatus.
Thank you so much for sharing your traffic source, absolutely agree that Blogengage has great potentials and I really need to be more active in it. That’s one of my resolutions this year too.
No matter which type of blogs we’re in, here’s to a great success for all bloggers in 2010! Big thanks for willing to leave your comment here. Do visit again!
Fantastic progress Ching Ya, looking at the number of comments in March vs. January!
In my case, I started out with most traffic coming from Google, but there are a few posts that hit it “big” on Stumbleupon, so now I get 85% of my traffic from SU – and some of it actually stays and subscribes and comments. You’re right – getting the post tagged correctly is vital.
Hope your comments and community will continue to grow in ’10!

SU is really great to attract new visitors. May in 2010 it’ll bring us more good news in terms of traffic. ^^
I always read your articles with interest. For me, SU is the site that drives most traffic to my blogs. I haven’t gotten to your height as yet. I’m still looking for ways to make a living from my blogs, but so far haven’t caught the right break.
This article is certainly one for a stumble! I’ve only signed up to Google Analytics, so maybe at the end of the year, I’ll have something substantial to share.

That’s fantastic! Good move on installing Google Analytics, this could be the best decision as you’ll be able to monitor your blogs as time progressed.
I remember the first time I installed it, was a little too crazy with the stats and it worn me out. Now I learn to go easy with it while making sure I’m still keeping up for the blog status. Will be looking forward to your stats next year, I’m sure you’ll have great news to share with us then, I can feel it.
Best wishes my friend, thank you for always coming back and comment!

So thank you Klaus, for returning and commenting. Truly appreciate your participation. ^^
That is very interesting to see that we pay some attention to of analytics and feedburner results this can help us moving forward a blog review should take into consideration three things “The Good”, “The not So Good” and “The things that needs improving” good post Ching Ya

That’s very true. I think Google has successfully monopolized this area, on top of that the tools are free! I think I took the services for granted over the months and I need to use it more with respect.
Appreciate your comments, keep them coming in future posts.
Hi Ching Ya.
Well, it was not without a reason that I added your name to Social Media Bloggers to watch in 2010. Plus suggested you as the blogger of the year at Authority Blogger Forum.
Your info is really starting to rock, and you truly understand the principle of info-sharing.
All your points for measuring our blogs is something I have added in my Social Media Strategy for 2010.
Reviewing popularity was something I had not planned properly last year. The articles I thought was very informative and good did not turn out as I thought. And some articles I got a lot of mentions on Twitter, but very few comments. And the article I got the most comments on was not as much tweeted. So it was a complex picture.
But your points is well taken, and I know I need to work on this in 2010.
Google and Twitter is also among my best sources of traffic. StumpleUpon, I totally neglected in 2009. That is something I am working on changing.
But I am setting up some goals to achieve more interaction on my blog. If you check my simple drawing of my Social Media house, I know have my blog on the top. Last year I pretty much had Twitter on top. And I think that was one of my mistakes.
I’m noticed positive changes, and I am working on more changes to achieve all my goals this year.
Cheers.. Are
.-= Are Morch´s last blog ..Social Media Bloggers To Watch =-.
Are,
First of all, bravo on noticing the need to change. I think that’s my biggest homework stepping in 2010. I’m still not quite over it yet and I do have some boundaries I need to break through in order to excel. Tough yet I know it’s doable when the time is right.
I know what you mean, the complex results do make us wonder ‘why’ a lot. I had those moments too and it occurred to me I need to follow up on post reactions rather than my own understandings. Maybe people see it differently than I do; or there are some tweaking to be done in our strategies. Need to look into that.
Exciting yet full of challenges. I think that’s the year we’re stepping in, agree? May the learning process begins.
I love seeing how other people analyze their blogging stats. You saw mine on my site, so I don’t have to share any specifics here. Suffice it to say that it’s always interesting seeing what attracts people and keeps them coming back for more.
Also, I don’t use StumbleUpon, going with Delicious instead.
.-= Mitch´s last blog ..Are You A Lurker Or Participant In Life? =-.
Mitch,
Your stats are very impressive as well! Especially you’re a prolific blogger, very well managed writing frequency. That I really admired.
May we know how was the traffic result with Delicious? Any special tips you like to offer us when using the service? Greatly appreciated.
Truthfully Ching Ya, over the last couple of months I haven’t kept up with Delicious as much because I started writing posts in advance to post later, then forgetting to go back and add those posts. When I was adding my posts there immediately after writing them, they were a top 10 referrer; now they’re not even in my top 25. That kind of proves you have to be consistent with doing it.
.-= Mitch´s last blog ..King Holiday #24 =-.
Mitch,
Consistency — very good advise! Good example of how one should continue to invest in the bookmarking site that works for him. Thank you so much for sharing!
More smart, sound ideas from you to help us with our blogging success!
The posts of mine that seem to have the most success in terms of commenting are my interviews of others, and my posts ruminating about my place in the blogging world. Apparently many others ruminate about that as well.
I haven’t checked on traffic sources in a while. Thanks for the reminder, Ching Ya! I was surprised to find:
19.55 direct
12.86 twitter.com
10.76 facebook.com
5.25 wassupblog.com (Thanks to Sire & his readers!)
4.33 stumbleupon.com

Hello Ching! This is very nice, the blog you have here. You must be putting in some serious work. Very well done. Yes, I do have strategies set up like the ones you illustrated and I sure hope it works. Methinks we all just have our own unique ways in getting traffic. =)

I’ve known for quite some time that Stumbleupon is a great place to network. I haven’t spent much time there though. I have course that teaches how to use it effectively and keep meaning to study it and never quite end up doing it – LOL.
I’m definitely going to put that on my list of things to do.

It’s good to know how to use SU effective including the features available. I haven’t taken much attention in SU lately, maybe it’s time I re-examine if there’s something new that I’m not aware of.
Best wishes and keep up the brilliant work, Eren!
Love how you broke it all down for me to understand this social networking thing.
I agree stumble and twitter are the best traffic sources…just like commenting. Facebook also helps a lot. Especially since your post about having a facebook fan page….I did make one…and believe me its working great…so many new readers…

Reviewing your own Blog is a sure fire way to get traffic indeed, most people if they can see that there are other visitors in your site, they would look in to it from time to time or maybe once in a while depending on the topic that interests them, it also shows how you improve from the past. Fir a new blogger you can look from where you stand before and your progress up to now…
Being a usual visitor of this site also gained me some traffic, and the number one thing is the continuous learning and i thank you for that…
So far, twitter, facebook and blogengage helped me on my traffic as well as this site, the last time i got the statistics, this site gave me 40% bounce rate, on which i need to improve…
like the the saying goes, “I have done my part, its for you to do the rest…”

Many times we try to learn how to gain lots of traffic to our blogs that we neglect the need to review the results instead – left us with an exhaustive mind, not knowing what went wrong. Glad you able to pick up something from Analytics and learn to improve from social media sites. I wish you good luck and a greater success in 2010.
Thank you for your continuous support.
I think that checking to see what your most popular posts are and then analyzing as to what made them popular is excellent as it will help towards writing more killer content.
I’m not much for stats. I do check analytics and statcounter, but I don’t go into any real depth. I just want to know how traffic is tracking compared to the day before.

Statcounter is just so quick and easy. Although it provides a lot more stats, I like it because it works in real time and shows who’s actually on my blog, where they came from and what they did while they were there.

not an issue. btw, 2009 has been a very good year for me too in this blogging thing. I think I’ve done fairly well in my blogging. Mr. G has been very kind to my blog by being the top traffic provider. Other two best traffic providers have been blogcatalog and stumbleupon. As a blogger, I feel 2009 was quite rewarding for me with tons of +ve reviews coming up like anything plus the page rank update just at the end of the year, wow..I couldn’t have hoped for much. What I feel is that as a blogger, you need to be innovative, creative and original. It has helped me a lot. And it can help anyone. Also, please write for your readers not for the search engines. You will be more and more successful with your blogging. Exceptions do prevail still. And lastly, follow the Kiss principle – Keep It Simple, Stupid. It works!
Now, about the most popular post of 2009? Well, it was tough for me to choose anyone. I am putting more than one here. hope its ok with you

Kai Lo,
Maybe you can try to connect some friends in StumbleUpon and helping out one another for starter. As Ari suggested above, people just may do the same for you too.
Worth a shot. Appreciate your comment.
Hi Ching Ya!
I know there is so much more promotion I could be doing, but it’s all about managing my time.
I think it is indeed a great thing to move from Blogger to WordPress. I see some super great blogs on Blogger but they lack the exposure.
So one can set tags on Stumble Upon? I had nit thought to do that.
I could be doing more in- depth Google Analytics analysis too. And sending out an occasional newsletter be e-mail, Problogger highly recommends those newsletters. My latest thing, as you may know, is I am now experimenting with posting on a set schedule of MWF. I give it a good go for at least 2months, and assess through Analytics.
And my most popular post was the Things Kids Say.
xo

Hi Jannie,
That’s a good idea to test out too. Frequency can definitely help in both traffic wise and SEO. Time management is what I need to look into as well as obviously I’m a bit lacking of ‘quantity’ when it comes to posting.
Maintaining both frequency and quantity needs skills, I just hope I can master that someday, somehow.
Oh yes, love that post! Well deserved.
Jannie, do keep me updated how your experiment go? Thank you so much for visiting.
Hi Ching, This is cool. But the review must be done on some good blog.
Abhi,
Actually the idea is about own blog-reviewing, more like a self-monitoring purpose. Regardless how is the progress of one’s blog, we all need to know which area we need to improve for a better performance in year(s) to come.
Blog review for other blogs is a totally different subject here. Thank you for your comment. ^^
“SU brought me a lot of new visitors but its bounce rate was still among the highest comparing to other traffic source”
Isn’t this the key issue though? You need to divide your time to things that actually bring worthwhile traffic…
Ben,
Welcome and thank you for the comment. ^^ SU traffic isn’t all that bad since I did, in fact meet some nice people there that I get to connect with and extend the networking elsewhere. Actually, I still need to thank SU for bringing in the traffic otherwise I wouldn’t have the chance to meet some who have now become my readers. Even it’s just for the 5% that’ll be all worth it for me.
Bounce rate issue wise may encourage me to write better, hopefully better tagging as well so to meet potential readers. SU is one of the traffic sources and thank you for the advise, I’ll definitely not neglecting other social networks as well.
I used to get quite a decent traffic from StumbleUpon before I changed my domain name.

What I would like to add is that once you have found that what kind of posts bring you the most traffic one can always use that kind of post as a link bait. Once done it can bring you lots and lots of traffic for your site.
For example I think you should have written more about twitter when you were getting those traffic and it would have really helped a lot. Thats just a suggestion but I am not a expert in blogging i just blog to blabber still not a full time one so i may be wrong as well.
