How to Allow Photo-Tagging by Fans on Your Facebook Page

Since the past few weeks I have received a lot of requests about photo-tagging in business pages:

It was a good question from Adam. There used to be a simple option to tweak the settings but ever since facebook had modified the photo tab and its layout last month, the option was completely invisible:

Good news is, after a long search within my own fan page, I managed to dig it up again. Basically there are two ways you can locate it:

Method #1 – Convert Photo Tab to Boxes

We all know Facebook had made clear that Boxes are going away for good after 23rd August 2010. Even so, facebook has yet to implement the change on all facebook accounts at once so lucky for me, I can still see my boxes tab lying comfortably on my Wall. If you can see yours too then here’s what you can do:

1. Go to Edit Page, look for Photo -> Application Settings.

2. In Profile, click ‘Add’ next to Box.

3. Now your ‘Photo’ will appear inside the Boxes tab. Click at ‘Edit Settings’ to reveal the photo-tagging setup:

Voila! Here it is!

Method #2 – Replace Page ID to Access the App Settings

Now here’s another scenario when a business page was already receiving fans photos before this. The ‘Edit Settings’ will be hidden from view as shown below:

In that case, there is one way you can bypass the hassles and go straightly to the app settings. Just replace ‘xxxxxxxx’ with your own Page ID inside the link below will do (2305272732 is the application ID for Photo app):

How to Locate Your Facebook Page ID?

If you have not created a vanity URL for your business page, you can easily obtain the page ID from the default link – the number at the back as indicated:

Once you have claimed your business page username, the page ID is no where in sight. What you can do is hover over ‘Edit Page’ then look for your page ID underneath your browser. Copy that and insert the numbers into the link as explained in Method #2.

Pretty simple right? Make sure to bookmark this post just in case you wish to make modifications to your fans’ photo tagging (or adding) in future.

Update 07/08/12: The procedures have changed since the launch of the new Facebook Timeline layout. In order to allow your fans to tag your page,

Go to ‘Edit Page’ -> Click ‘Manage Permissions’ -> and make sure these two are ticked:

#1 Posting Ability – Everyone can add photos and videos to ‘Your page’

#2 Tagging Ability – People can tag photos posted by ‘Your page’

Now Is Your Turn…

Do you allow fans to add and tag photos in your facebook fan page? How effective do you think photos can help in improving your facebook page engagement with fans?

  1. Outstanding information Ching Ya! I’ve to learn a lot about FB and these tips come very handy 🙂

Also facebook is changing layout and privacy policy permanently so all people must readapt the FB’s knowledge constantly.

    All the best,

    Gera

    1. Thank you Gera, it’s really challenging to keep up with Facebook’s paces. 🙂 Appreciate your visit and always great to see you here.

      1. Ching Ya

Method 1 didn’t work, so I tried method 2. Didn’t work either. It just takes me back to the home page where the news feed is. What else can I do?

  2. Cool and valuable info here Ching Ya.

Tagging is most definitive the ‘next thing’. Web 3.0 will focus a hole lot more on this type of interaction. We will see this more also with location based services in the future. The big draw back at the moment is to sort out some of the privacy issues.

And I think eventually Facebook will find a formula that will bring Social Interaction into a new generation.

    Cheers.. Are

    1. Yes, apart from all the new toys that are mushrooming in the social media world, it’s up to a dedicated, customer-oriented service that is willing to listen and attend to customers needs at all times to win the hearts of many.

Regardless of how advanced and outrageously genius an app can be, without a good support there’s still a big lack to reach the web 3.0. It’s more than just the concept along, but how its performance can satisfy its users in long term.

      Thanks for visiting!

  3. Very useful and informative article. This goes the same for all your posts. Keep it up. Btw, I have removed my personal fanpage but surely, I will be using your tips in future if I have to create a new fanpage for any purpose. Thanks as ever for sharing these useful tips.

    1. Thank you Aswani for commenting.

Yes, can be a good idea to put the page on hold until you have a better plan for it. Until then, keep up your great network in facebook. 🙂 Appreciate your visit.

    1. Thanks Pradeep 🙂 Yes, I understand what you mean. I had to modify the privacy settings so only I can view the tagging in my personal profile, it’s good to have moderation beforehand.

      Appreciate the visit.

  4. my publishing rights have been blocked due to a violation of page policy
but i think some group of people make fake profile and want to close my page..
1 girl also comment on my page that she is in mood of spoling my page.. because i playing a contest Mr. and Miss facebook ..in which on the basis of people like the pic. of Nominees i choose Mr. and Miss Facebook …
but she make fake profile to win so i say to her not do that..then may be she is reporting my page so my page is please help me

    1. Ankur,

Since nobody has direct contact with FB it is quite hard to find out the reasons why your publishing right is blocked. I’m afraid this is out of my ability to answer as well. Either to wait for the block to be lifted, wait for a better solution from FB/suitable form so to appeal your case, or delete/start over a new account.

  5. Thank you Ching Ya! I didn’t even realize our photo tagging option was turned off until I checked after this tutorial. I fixed it yesterday, and guess what? This morning, another company tagged us in a post to check out our photos from an industry event we both attended.

Your blog entry prompted me to leave a comment and encourage the other company to tag themselves in our event photos. Instead, they wrote a whole wall post about us. Even better!

    1. Thank you Melanie for sharing with us this great news. 🙂 I’m glad this article could help. I appreciate your visit and comment. Hope to see you again soon.

  6. Wow! Lovely! I am a fun of facebook and i have never known this. I must implement this right away. Thank you for sharing.

    1. Appreciate your visit Moneywise, hope this little tip can assist your facebook experience in long run. All the best in blogging too.

  7. Wealth of information on social network and I am so glad one of my blog friend (you!) are well equipped to be a Social Media consultant. Ever considered it? 😉 Thanks for the info. Never knew Facebook has loads of perks.

    1. That’s very kind of you to say so, Kiran. 🙂 If only I have the opportunity someday, that’ll be a dream come true. Always great to learn about something you’re passionate about and make it a career. Thanks so much for the encouragement, my friend. I’ll work my very best. *hugs* So great to see you here!

  8. Hello – Thank you for your helpful site. If I am the admin of a fan page, is there a way to tag photos when the people I’m tagging are not “friends” of my personal facebook page are fans of our page?

When I try to tag a photo in our fan page, it only brings up my list of personal friends at tagging options, rather than the fans of the page.

I’d appreciate any tips you might have!

    Thank you, Amy

  9. My fans can’t seem to tag photos on my page. I have the setting box for fans to add photos but I cannot tag people as well. When I click on a photo to tag it does not list the fans of that page which is unlike my own personal facebook page where all of my friends are listed when I want to tag. What setting do I need to change to get my fans to be able to tag photos on my page and that I can do it for them as well.

    1. Christine, to allow your fans to tag photos on your page, follow Method #2 as explained above. But if you wish to tag your fans, that is not possible unless they are your friends. Kindly be reminded that photo-tagging is a feature that can only be used on profiles only – meaning only friends can tag one another, same as how your fans can tag their friends in the photo your page posted.

  10. Hi Ching Ya, thank you for this awesome information. You helped me resolve the issue of allowing fans to uploading pics and tagging, after I spent the last hours searching all over FB for help and trying to find FB contact. CHeers!

  11. You’re a life saver! 😀 Thank you! Now I’m having trouble by allowing people to add “photo albums” instead of one by one to the wall. Do you know how to make this process easier?? Thank you!

    1. Hi Sarah, ‘Photo by others’ is actually more or less a specific album for fans upload only. So fans won’t be able to create a new album other than that, but upload to the existing ‘photo by others’ album. 🙂
