7 Free iFrame Applications to Create Welcome Tab (Custom Tabs) for Your Facebook Page.

how to create a custom welcome tab

Custom tabs can be one of the greatest inventions for facebook page. It brings a page to life, allows content enhancement to impress and capture attention. Setting up a custom tab can be easy (DIY) or complicated with advanced coding knowledge of HTML, Javascript and iframes (soon to come). Answering these questions can help in deciding what type of custom tab you are planning to build:

  • What is the tab for?
  • What are the results I hope to achieve from the tab?
  • What kind of brand image I wish to portray to visitors?
  • What are the must-have designing elements within the tab?
  • What is your budget for a custom tab?

Also, one more thing you should know about is iframes will be replacing FBML tabs soon:

iframes to replace static fbml in custom tabs

Existing FBML tabs will continuously be supported but no doubt, IFrames will be the new lead in facebook customization. Currently IFrames tabs are yet to be released by facebook. A fan from our page had brought up a good concern here – “ I don’t have much knowledge in setting up a welcome tab, but are there any possible ways for a DIY?”.

Yes, there are. In fact I’m going to share with you some facebook applications (come with free accounts) that can do just that. But there will be limitations comparing to customization work done by professionals, such as advertisement links or hidden features. If you’re in a hurry to setup a welcome tab (or any landing tab/custom tabs) for your business page, FBML is still a good pick. Otherwise, these facebook applications will be a good fit for your fan page:

5 Facebook Applications to Create Welcome Tab (Custom & Sub-tabs)

1. Welcome Tab for Pages

HTML Knowledge: Yes
Sub-tabs: No

welcome tab for facebook page

The whole concept is similar to Static FBML, you ought to have basic HTML knowledge to get things running on the tab. So this may be a good pick if you’re running out of FBML boxes (maximum 10 tabs per page) to add. The only advantage it has over Static FBML is the built-in analytical stats for your welcome tab visits.

If you are to stick with Static FBML (at least it has no footer message; tab name is editable), try to give this article a read about embedding Google Analytics code within the tab.

2. TabSite

HTML Knowledge: Yes
Sub-tabs: Yes (Two)

tabsite allows subtabs for fan page

TabSite has a wordpress-like control panel for drafting your tab content: font resizing, styles, even media files uploading (images, videos). For its free account, you can create up to two sub-tabs. You can arrange the tab order and how they are displayed to fans – horizontally or as a drop down menu.

3. Static FBML and Welcome Tab by iwiPage

HTML Knowledge: Yes
Sub-tabs: Yes (>2 but Limited)

set tab visibility to fans by iwipage

I love sub-tabs so no doubt I’m giving iwiPage a test-run. It is said to support iframes, Javascript and flash on all sub-tabs except ‘Home’. I did not get to verify on the iframe insertion so if anybody did, kindly share your experience with the app in the comments. Apart from the slick design with drag and drop, the ability to hide tab from non-fans until they liked the fan page impressed me the most – it’s a feature that not always come with a FREE account, but iwipage allows it (but with limitations).

The customization is a bit challenging until you figure out how it works. I would advise you to watch this video tutorial first to prevent frustration and lost of your work:

4. Tigerlily CMS

[UPDATED: 12/01/2012] This app is no longer available.

HTML Knowledge: No
Sub-tabs: Yes (Two)

rss feed, social feeds and video embed to tigerlily custom tab

Tigerlily is pretty much straight forward (drag and drop). Its free account offers users with basic configurations without the need of knowing any HTML at all. As long you don’t mind their brand name on the tab and footer, you can insert quite a number of media files or social feeds with just the source links (no sign in for authorization purposes).

It offers several applications for different packages. More about their price plan here.

5. Pagemodo Pagebuilder

HTML Knowledge: No
Sub-tabs: No (One Tab Only)

Pagemodo Pagebuilder for facebook page

For those who are not into complicated HTML or CSS code modifications, pagemodo gives you sophisticated design layout with the simplicity of drag and drop! Everything is basically well customized. Page admin only needs to replace the images and texts, reposition the content before confirming your changes. Font customization and background design can be modified. No designing skills required to make your custom tabs (welcome, showroom etc) look like pro’s!

But to unlock video-embedding themes, add more tabs and eliminating the footer, a paid plan is needed.

The reason why I am so into facebook customization is that every page is unique on its own. Even with these DIY apps, you can still make a difference for your welcome tab if you willing to experiment and improvise. Don’t stop by adding the application to your page. Monitor its results and find out what works and what’s not.

Hi Ching Ya.

I will be going to miss the Tab function, but again welcome iFrame. Not 100% sure yet why they landed on iFrame. Though most of their plugins utilize iFrame.

But does this effect page applications? Is it not just effecting Tabs on personal profiles?

I am sure Facebook will provide us with something that will make our Facebook Fan Pages even more streamlined and effective in building an outstanding brand for ourselves.

Cheers.. Are

Hi Are, in my opinion it won’t affect profiles much (especially when fbml was never been applied there); as for apps that are providing tab customizations like above, surely they will need to improvise, give users enough reasons to stay with their apps with better support. :-) Thanks so much for dropping by.

There is one more way to create custom tabs now! The new service I’m working on, http://splashtab.com, also makes it easy to create custom landing tabs for your Facebook page. We offer professional “designer” templates, in addition to the DIY templates. Check us out, and thanks for the great article!

Thanks for the heads up, Evan I will take a look at it. :-) Does spashtab provides any free accounts for users like the fb apps above? Also, what is your take in the iframes implementation by facebook? Will it affect your service or none at all? Love to hear your thoughts in this.

SplashTab is not free, but it is affordable: plans start at $6.95/month for one tab, which you can update and change at any time. We prefer to provide our customers a quality product free from advertising and the best way to do that is with paid subscriptions.

The iframe change will not be a problem. The roadmap states that existing FBML apps will be “grandfathered in”, and that just NEW applications cannot be FBML. Also, that statement applies more to Canvas apps than Tabs, I think. And regardless, we will work to update SplashTab to accommodate any changes Facebook makes so that our users have a transparent and uninterrupted experience. Thanks!

Hi Ching Ya,

You always seem to have the most useful HOW TO tips to share in your posts – really great!

This particular one is just what I needed. I’ve been meaning to do a welcome page on my FB group for quite some time now. I’m still contemplating whether doing it myself or getting the help of a pro – but at least now, I know where to go in case I take a crack at it. But first – I will need to brush up on my very weak HTML skills.

Needless to say, I’ve bookmarked this page. As for your site, well…I bookmarked that quite a while ago :) .

Thanks again for sharing this. Keep ‘em comin’ cause I intend to keep comin’ back for more :) .

Cheers

Hi Ingrid,
Thank you so much for the kind remarks. :-) There’s nothing more rewarding to hear that people are benefiting from these info. Be sure to share with us your page link when you’re done.

Hi Ching! This is a great round up! I used Pagemodo to create a Welcome page for a project at work. All of the other managers thought I was a FaceBook genius! :) I wouldn’t dare tell them how super simple it was to use.

I’d like to take a look at some of the others resources soon but for now everyone here at work is happy.

Btw – should I be concerned about FBML going away? The good thing is, I never learned too much about it, so should I just skip it now?

Thanks!

Hi Ileane, so nice to see you here. :) And great job with Pagemodo, a fan on my page also tried it and she loved it too. That’s the purpose of having it – Simple, impressive and effective to use. Your managers don’t always need to know everything, right? Sshh.. lol!

As for FBML, no I don’t think you should be concerned about that. Even if you already had FBML boxes on your page those will be supported after the iframes launch. Iframes will be the lead in future, so as much I enjoy using FBML, gotto follow the new trend now. :-)

Thanks for the wonderful Facebook tips, cheers!

[...] And speaking of Facebook. ?Blogger Wong Ching Ya shows us how to create indiviualized tabs for your fan page that give your site a bit of individuality. Sure people prefer relating to people rather than cool looking graphics, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make your home on the biggest social site n the planet attractive as well. These tips are certainly useful for those who have a dedicated facebook page. Can’t say much about iframes but hopefully it should all work in a good way. Thanks again for such excellent post. Keep writing :)

Thanks so much for visiting, Aswani. :-) Can’t help it, I’m a little too obsessed with facebook pages recently. lol! But you’re right, let’s hope iframes will be a user-friendly app and works well for all. Have a great day ahead!

Thanks Ching Ya, just what I was looking for. I use the static fbml page but needed more flexibility for a Christmas Tree Farm page I am creating for a client.

You’re welcome, Sue. Sure is wonderful to see you here. :-) I wish you a great success in setting up the page. Be sure to let us know which is your favorite among these apps. Enjoy!

My face book site is JacktheDog. I have several problems, and do not quite get fan page function and how to separate business fan page from personal also a few other clean up items. I am an author with a low to modest budget. How do you charge for consultations? I am very interested in keeping my pages separate, and being able to direct people only to the fan page when I have interaction with them though a forum or comment section.
Please contact me asap, as I would like to make a business decision soon.
Thank you

Hi Victor, appreciate your visit.

When it comes to separating your page from your profile, there’s no 100% separation with different email login once both are connected. But facebook does provide enhanced privacy settings that will help to protect your profile from over-exposed when you are promoting/administrating your page. Kindly have a look if you missed these posts about important points when it comes to separating your page from profile:

Part 1: http://www.wchingya.com/2010/08/protect-facebook-profile-business-page.html

Part 2: http://www.wchingya.com/2010/08/manage-separate-facebook-profile-business.html

Fan Page is public viewable by default. The privacy settings applied are only for profiles but not your fan page. Facebook Groups, on the other hand allows admin to create private group (members by invitation) but it’s less viral and does not equip with applications or vanity url. Fan Page has a more ‘viral’ effect therefore, it’s important to understand who are you trying to connect and how you’d like to make use of the apps (either page or group):

New Features about Group: http://www.allfacebook.com/new-facebook-groups-2010-10

I’m currently provide facebook customization services instead of consultations, however you can drop me an email if you need further information, will try to assist if I manage: http://www.wchingya.com/logobanner-designs

Ooooo. I like this. I’m gearing up to create a new Facebook page and I’ll definitely come back here to review this info when I do. Thanks, Ching Ya!

Thank you Tristan and nice meeting you as well. Glad you find the post helpful, looking forward to your newly setup page, whenever you’re ready. Best wishes! :-)

Read the article & also the comments. This is one of the most useful post for Facebookers, thanks once again buddy!

I changed my blog’s FB page Welcome Tab long back.. now need to revamp, hope this tutorial will help me very dearly!! Thanks buddy!!!

Hi Ching Ya
I have a martial arts website supported by a facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/bunkaijutsu. I have just found out how to create a “welcome” page (which I’ll be doing soon). However, when I go to “Edit page”, then “Manage Permissions”, I do not have an option to change the landing tab for people who have not already “liked” my page.
How can I change my welcome page to my default landing page for new people?
Thanks
Charlie

Charlie,
May I know is your fan page a ‘community’ page or ‘official’ page? It is said that community pages are not given the default landing tab option so just wish to be sure.

Hi Ching Ya
Thanks for getting back to me. I think it is a community page. I set it up a little while back when I didn’t really know what I was doing.
Is there anyway I can get it changed?

Thanks

Charlie

Charlie, try this form and request for a category review of your page:

Thanks, I’ll give it a go :)

HI CHing, This has got to be the best facebook tabs page creation post I have read in along long time. Believe me ..I tried creating before..and was never happy, cause I would make the page…but cause i have little or no knowledge of html it would look very unprofessional. Hence I just gave up on it.
BUt now..I am feeling optimistic again…i might just use one of these to create my welcome landing page :) Will let you know as soon as I do..and would love your opinion on it.
Thank you a million times over for this post sweetie. You are awesome!
Much Love,
Z~

Ching Ya,

Thanks for a great summary of various Welcome Tab apps.

Hy.ly recently released its Welcome Tab app for Facebook at http://apps.facebook.com/hyly-welcome-tab-app/ .

We had two goals in mind in creating this Welcome Tab app:
- Make it really SIMPLE to use for the page owner. It takes 5 mins to publish!
- Make it obvious for visitors to LIKE the page created by the page owner.

I would love for your your readers to Try out the app for free at http://apps.facebook.com/hyly-welcome-tab-app/

(BTW, just discovered your site. It looks really good — need to check your posts for a few good hints.)

Hello Ching Ya,

My name is Monti and I work for iwipa (iwipa makes iwipage, the application you so kindly mentioned in this article).
I first want to thank you for the mention, we truly appreciate it.

I also wanted to mention our new (coming soon) application. Its called “Super Pages” and it will basically turn a fan page into a full fledged social network with a discussion board, blogs, classifieds, user profiles, 100% SEO friendly and much more.

All features are optional.

You can check it out here: http://apps.facebook.com/build-free-website/

Launching in a month or so.
Thanks again!

Monti

Hi Ching Ya. Love your site. Great content.
I visited your FB page as well and I love your welcome tab. How do I get a new visitor’s user name to appear on the ‘non fan’ part of the tab. Does it require extensive coding skills?

Hi Winn, thanks so much for visiting. Regarding the visitor’s profile name on my welcome tab, that was created via FBML code. Sadly, this code does not work in iframe app and once Facebook disabled FBML in June this year, the tab will no longer work as well. Haven’t found a workaround for this coding yet.
